NetApp and Nutanix: Another Exit Ramp From the VMware Question
Nutanix and NetApp announced a collaboration at .NEXT integrating NetApp enterprise storage with the Nutanix Cloud Platform and the AHV hypervisor. For customers weighing what to do at their next VMware renewal, the options list just got shorter to evaluate and easier to justify.
Why this combination is interesting
Nutanix has been the most frequently named alternative in post-acquisition VMware conversations, but the storage story has often meant moving to a different data platform at the same time — two migrations at once, which is how migration projects fail. Keeping ONTAP underneath while changing the hypervisor above splits that into one problem at a time.
The joint solution also carries ONTAP Autonomous Ransomware Protection with AI and the Ransomware Resilience service, so the security posture travels with the data rather than being rebuilt on the new platform.
The decision this actually informs
- Estate size and licensing exposure. Run the renewal math against the alternatives before assuming either outcome.
- Feature dependency. Deep NSX or vSAN dependencies raise the migration cost considerably.
- Team familiarity. The platform your team can still operate confidently in year two is the right one.
- Storage continuity. Keeping the data platform constant across a hypervisor change removes the single largest source of migration risk.
We run these assessments with real workload and licensing data rather than vendor comparison charts. Sometimes the answer is to stay and upgrade. Increasingly it is not — and either way, the analysis belongs before the renewal deadline, not after it.
